During my time running a telco company there were many problems that dialup clients would encounter. The most common was noise on the telephone line, or linenoise. Most of this was due to the telco cutting corners and not living up to billions worth of tax payer agreements already paid for. There was a reason many people could not connect at 56k speeds back in the 90s and that was due to bad lines.

The idea that there was a valid signal masked by noise stuck with me and I started using this as a gamer and programmer handle. With the rise of social media the signal to noise ratio has only increased, making me think that linenoise is a worthy handle even decades later.
